Agri-Food and Drink article Agribusinesses are looking to the internet to get their information.
For the last couple of years, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has been testing an app called AgriPhone, which uses an iPhone’s microphone to identify where fires are burning in rural areas.
The app works by asking users to identify a number, or number of flames, and when they do, it tells them where to find the firefighting response.
While the app is now in beta, it’s still a lot of work for small farmers, as well as the public.
The USDA says the app can help in detecting wildfires when it’s not possible to find them using traditional methods.
But the technology isn’t perfect, and the US is still a relatively small part of the global wildfire disaster.
That’s partly due to the fact that there are no national firefighting organizations to assist local governments with their firefighting responsibilities.
Agri Phone uses a proprietary software called a “map” which uses data gathered from smartphones to identify the exact spot where the fire is.
In a statement to Engadgets, the USDA explained that the app was built to assist farmers and ranchers with their disaster response needs, and that the software was built by local companies who were able to leverage technology they already had.
“AgriPhone is not designed to be a ‘one-stop-shop’ fire response tool,” the USDA said in a statement.
“While we have developed a map that uses data from our phones to identify fires, we also have developed software that can be used to identify these fires using data from a variety of sources.
The software used by Agriphone is not a one-stop shop, and we are working with several companies in the agriculture and rural development industries to bring this technology to the public in a way that will be easier to use and more reliable.”
Agri phone is now available in the App Store, Google Play, and iTunes, but the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) told Engadges that it will continue testing the technology and that there will be updates coming soon.
“We are actively working to develop a new software solution that we can share with the public, as we are in the process of finalizing our disaster response requirements,” the agency said in its statement.
