The United States Department of Agriculture announced on Thursday that it has awarded $1.7 billion to the nation’s agricultural colleges and universities to help them grow more food.

The USDA has awarded over $2 billion in USDA loans and grants since 2006.

The agency also awarded a $1 million grant to the College of Agricultural Engineering and Applied Science to help students prepare for a job in agriculture.

The Agriculture Department said the loans and funds will go to universities and colleges that are working to build the nation the fastest-growing food system in history, with an anticipated cost of $11 billion by 2020.

The grants will be used to support students and students-at-large to apply for USDA loans, build applications for USDA grants and build partnerships with other USDA agencies to support agricultural programs.
