A new breed of rice is coming from a farm in the Chinese agricultural university of China Agricultural University in Wuhan, China, a Reuters report said.
China’s National Agricultural University of Agriculture (NAUBA) said the first crop was made from rice, which it is calling the “Chinese rice.”
The news comes a week after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the use of the new rice, a product that could help feed the world’s growing population.
China is the world leader in rice production, and rice imports from the United States totaled $9.6 billion last year.
